Cyndi Celeste

Cyndi Celeste (b. 1996) is a spoken word poet, writer, and creative entrepreneur based in Barbados. She is an arts activist and language advocate who uses literature and performance to encourage social discourse on issues of identity.

Both on the page and onstage, Cyndi’s work contextualises what it is to be young, black, and progressive in the Caribbean, often exploring themes of racism, gender, language, and cultural identity. A graduate of the University of the West Indies (Cave Hill Campus) Linguistics programme, Cyndi has received several accolades, including a National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA) Bronze Award in Writing and Performance; second place in the inaugural Black British Writers International Poetry Competition; and a world ranking of 21 in the Women of the World Poetry Slam (2021).  She has co-ordinated several community outreach projects including youth open mic nights, developmental workshops in schools, and community writing workshops. She has also released an album of her work, entitled Cyndicated, and her writing has been published in the Volume 35 of The Caribbean Writer literary journal.

For this FIREFLY exhibition, Cyndi crafted two orginal pieces entitled Paradox and Illustria inspired by the works of Donné Haynes and Von Hall respectively.
